Kehoe Myers provided the Structural, Hydraulic and Civil Engineering Services for the Centre of Excellence, a landmark facility designed to advance training in the agriculture, horticulture, veterinary and food production industries.

The Centre includes modern primary industry technologies such as video analysis of stock in simulated saleyards, high yield farming methods, land use mapping with smart bots and aerial drones, controlled horticulture pods and simulated veterinary surgery facilities. These innovations establish the Centre as a place of excellence for research, training and education.

Delivering the project required practical and creative solutions developed in close collaboration with the Architect. Located within Queens Park, the design needed to reflect the character of the park while making the most of the space available. The existing infrastructure presented challenges when connecting to new services, and a late variation to the design introduced the need for a hygiene basin and associated heat pump system, which our team successfully integrated.

Kehoe Myers also worked with the Architect to achieve a Green Star rating for the Centre, helping reduce the environmental impact of the facility while supporting biodiversity and sustainable practices.

We are proud to have contributed to a project that not only supports industry relevant training but also strengthens the community and education sector.

Toowoomba TAFE B Block Refurbishment

TAFE Toowoomba’s B Block has been transformed into a contemporary education facility that now houses a simulated nursing ward, library, and a variety of student study spaces. The refurbishment delivers a dynamic learning environment that supports both modern health training and general education, helping prepare students for real-world careers.

Kehoe Myers was engaged to provide both Structural and Hydraulic Engineering Services for the project.

Our Hydraulic Engineering Services involved the design and documentation of the domestic water supply, fire water supply, and gas reticulation systems to support the new facilities. Our Structural Engineering Services included a thorough structural assessment of the proposed building modifications, ensuring that the refurbished block could accommodate its new purpose while meeting safety and compliance standards.

This project plays an important role in enhancing the resources available at the Toowoomba TAFE Campus, and Kehoe Myers is proud to contribute to the delivery of upgraded facilities that benefit both students and staff.

St Joseph's College Toowoomba Mary Rice Building

The Mary Rice Building is a contemporary education facility that delivers an exceptional mix of learning, recreation, and staff spaces across three thoughtfully designed levels.

The ground floor accommodates three science classrooms and a preparation lab, along with a general learning area and a service corridor that links to the existing music block. Sport change rooms and bathroom facilities also feature on this level.

On Level 1, students and staff share an inviting and functional environment, with spaces including a common room, several staff offices, a full gym, PE classrooms, and staff amenities.

Level 2 offers seven general learning areas (GLAs), all separated by operable walls. This flexible design enables the spaces to be easily transformed into larger exam rooms or collaborative teaching environments.

Externally, the covered walkways providing connectivity to other school buildings, an outdoor learning area, PWD parking, and a below ground rainwater storage tank.

We were engaged for Civil, Structural, and Hydraulic engineering services for the design and construction phase on this impressive project.

Our civil engineering team provided planning infrastructure advice, attended council and project meetings, and assessed site constraints, available services, and loading requirements. We delivered an Engineering Infrastructure Report and a Conceptual Stormwater Management Plan addressing both detention and water quality measures. Civil works encompassed the design of building platforms, accessways, car parking, pedestrian zones, drainage connections to Coronet Street, and a roof water harvesting system, along with retaining walls and erosion control measures.

Hydraulic services included hot and cold-water reticulation, roof water reuse, and upgrading the overall fire services for the school. The scope also included sanitary plumbing, roof drainage, and gas reticulation to the new science rooms.

Structural engineering works comprised the design of footings and slabs, reinforced concrete columns, suspended concrete floors, and structural framing using both steel and timber included wall and roof bracing, tie-downs, and a pitched steel-framed roof supporting a suspended ceiling.

This exciting project was brought to life in collaboration with Bryant Building Contractors and VHD Studios.

The Mary Rice Building now stands as a key part of the campus, designed to meet the evolving needs of modern education while celebrating the school’s identity and values.

Master Builders Toowoomba Office Fitout

The civil engineering scope of the project focused on the design of siteworks associated with the building upgrade, including vehicular access areas, carparking, and PWD-compliant pedestrian pathways. The design incorporated finished surface levels to facilitate effective surface drainage across the site, based on a detailed 3D electronic site and feature survey. Additionally, the design included a stormwater drainage system to manage runoff from all roofed and sealed surfaces, directing flows to an approved point of discharge within the existing piped system.

As part of the project, Kehoe Myers delivered a smart and efficient hydraulic design tailored to support both function and comfort. This included a reliable domestic water supply system, providing hot and cold water to all new fixtures throughout the space. Our design also encompassed seamless integration of sanitary plumbing and drainage, connecting new fixtures to the existing building system for cost-effective performance. To complete the upgrade, we incorporated a robust roof drainage solution for the new awning and carport—ensuring long-term protection from the elements and peace of mind for the client.

The structural engineering scope for the project included the design of footings for the new carport and access ramp, based on a high-level footing system suitable for a “Class M” site classification in accordance with AS2870 standards. In addition, structural steel roof framing was designed for both the new front awning of the main building and the carport, ensuring durability, stability, and seamless integration with the overall architectural vision.

We were engaged to provide civil, structural, and hydraulic engineering services, as well as construction phase support, for the successful delivery of this important education project.

Our civil engineering services included review and assessment of required services, along with the design and documentation of stormwater drainage, erosion and sediment control measures, and siteworks such as building platforms, vehicular access, car parking, and pedestrian connections.

Hydraulic engineering works focused on the design and documentation of the water supply, including fire water systems, coordination of flow and pressure testing, sanitary plumbing and drainage, and roof drainage.

Connal House - Toowoomba Angican School

We are proud to add the Connel House Refurbishment at Toowoomba Anglican School to our growing portfolio of education projects.

The administration building has undergone a multimillion-dollar refurbishment. This two-storey facility now features a reception area, general learning spaces, administration offices, amenities, a meeting room, dining hall, and dedicated staff areas.

We played a key role in this project by delivering structural, civil, and hydraulic engineering services. Our structural engineering services covered footings and ground floor slabs for existing and new areas, reinforced masonry walls for lift and stair shafts, and a suspended steel/timber first floor. We also designed concrete stair flights and structural steel/timber wall and roof framing, including bracing and tie-downs for all extensions and alterations.

Our civil engineering services included siteworks for building platforms, access areas, car parking, and pedestrian paths, ensuring proper drainage based on a provided 3D survey. We designed stormwater drainage to the existing system, with no upgrades to external drainage planned. Additionally, we developed the car parking layout and implemented erosion and sediment control measures for the construction areas.

Our hydraulic engineering services included domestic water supply to new fixtures, fire water supply for hydrant and hose reel coverage per local requirements and obtaining pressure and flow tests for the existing fire hydrant service. We also provided sanitary plumbing and drainage for new fixtures, connected to the existing system, and designed roof drainage for the new roof areas.

During the construction phase, our team conducted thorough site visits to uphold the integrity of our designs and provide necessary certifications, supporting the project’s successful completion.

First built in 1959, it now stands renewed, reflecting TAS’s dedication to heritage and excellence. Archbishop Jeremy Greaves blessed the building, marking a meaningful moment for our community. With 90% of demolition materials recycled and most work done by local contractors, the project also highlighted our commitment to sustainability and local support.

RSPCA Toowoomba

Located in the Wellcamp Business Park, Toowoomba's RSPCA facility stands as a beacon of compassion and innovation since its completion in 2020. This cutting-edge animal shelter, serves as a haven for up to 200 animals, ranging from domestic pets such as dogs and cats to horses and livestock. Beyond its primary function of providing refuge, the facility extends its offerings to the community, providing exceptional boarding and grooming services for beloved pets.

Kehoe Myers were engaged to provide Civil and Structural Engineering services on this well needed project. These services included the design, documentation and certification as well inspections and liaison with the project team during construction.

Throughout the construction phase, we remained actively engaged, conducting thorough inspections and fostering open communication with the project team, thereby facilitating a smooth and efficient execution.

The expertise of our Civil team included the design of stormwater drainage systems, erosion and sediment control measures, and comprehensive siteworks. From meticulously planning building platforms to optimising vehicular access areas and ensuring ample parking space, every aspect was considered to ensure harmonisation with the surrounding environment and fulfill the diverse needs of the facility.

Meanwhile, our Structural team's ingenuity was evident in the design of footings and ground floor slabs, concrete masonry load-bearing walls, and wall and roof framing.

UniSQ B Block Refurbishment

The University of Southern Queensland’s B Block Building has graced the entrance of the Toowoomba campus for over four decades, leaving an indelible mark on the landscape.

Now, this revered building has undergone a transformation, emerging as a vibrant cultural hub. With the addition of an art gallery, alongside office and function areas, providing the structure with a contemporary flair while preserving its historical charm.

Our involvement in this transformative project encompassed a multitude of tasks, beginning with a site investigation and schematic design report. From there, we undertook the design documentation and certification of the new building works and associated siteworks, guiding the project seamlessly up to the Building Works Application and Tender stages.

Throughout the construction phase, our commitment to excellence remained unwavering. We provided essential certification inspections and maintained open lines of communication with the project team, ensuring the realisation of the architectural vision with precision and efficiency.

In the realm of Structural Engineering, our contributions were multifaceted and comprehensive. From designing footings for the new entry roof and lift in Block ‘B’, to designing reinforced concrete slabs for paved pedestrian areas, every element was engineered to withstand the test of time. Additionally, our expertise extended to reinforcing concrete masonry load-bearing walls for the new lift shaft and supporting the existing suspended concrete floor slab, as well as implementing structural steel roof framing for the new entry roof and Western awning in Block ‘B’.

Our Hydraulic Engineering focused on ensuring optimal functionality and efficiency. This included designing domestic water supply systems, sanitary plumbing and drainage solutions, and roof water drainage systems. We also conducted a thorough review of the existing building to ensure compliance with private building certifier and Queensland Fire and Emergency Services requirements for fire hydrant and fire hose reel coverage, further enhancing the safety and security of the premises.

We take immense pride in our role in revitalising the University of Southern Queensland’s B Block Building into a dynamic cultural hub, poised to inspire and enrich the community for generations to come.

The Views Subdivision

The Views at Sanctuary Rise Development is a residential subdivision, delivering 311 lots over six (6) stages. This subdivision was designed to enhance economic productivity and affordable living within the community of Toowoomba while providing needed residential land supply.

When working on the Civil design of the residential lots, Kehoe Myers took into consideration the commitment and focus our client had on delivering important outcomes to benefit the community and the surrounding environment in the following key areas:

The Views features efficiently designed, smaller land parcels that minimise land prices and improve living affordability. This provides greater opportunities for new and first-time buyers to secure their position on the property ladder. With scenic rural views and proximity to shopping centres, schools and the Toowoomba airport - this sustainable subdivision caters for the growth in demand for residential land in the Toowoomba region.

With all design aspects we aimed to capture the natural beauty of the surrounding parklands and views as much as possible, with infrastructure designed to suit the terrain. The site is flanked to the north and west by the existing Council bushland reserve, connected by a network of fire trails. Due to its steep terrain and inaccessibility, the public use of the adjacent bushland reserve before the development was made difficult. Investments have been made in landscaping enhancements such as improving public access to the fire trails, revegetation using native plantings, the use of open grassed areas, and the provision of shade structures and play equipment. These will encourage the public to better utilise and value the reserve.

We believe that The Views is a comfortable and welcoming residential development that reflects the Toowoomba culture and community values. Investments have been made, in negotiation with Local Council Parks & Gardens officers, to provide improvements to the adjacent bushland reserve that will encourage the surrounding residents to engage in bushwalking and other active recreation activities, promoting healthy lifestyles.

The Views presented a rare and unique development opportunity for the city of Toowoomba, which required leadership and vision to undertake and execute. There is no doubt that the elevated aspect of the subdivision atop Cranley escarpment provides commanding views over Oakey and the Darling Downs to the northwest for residents and visitors alike. However, it also presented some unique challenges to the design team that required significant innovation and “out of the box” thinking to address.

The design focuses on both the aesthetics and the functionality of the development. The infrastructure is designed for any future increase to the amenity of the land for future upgrades. The steep terrain presented a challenge in maximising the utilisation of development space against the visual impact and technical civil engineering challenges involved. These challenges were met with engineered retaining walls, keyed securely into the founding bedrock, and innovative stormwater drainage solutions.

“Out of the box” thinking included the management of overland stormwater flows such that runoff volumes down the escarpments did not exceed those experienced before the development. The remainder of the developed flow was piped to multiple detention basins within the nature reserve at the bottom of the escarpment, which has been fully landscaped to blend into the reserve environment. The basins’ design incorporates tenable water quality bio-retention components to outlet stormwater in a much more environmentally better way.

The steep escarpment grades exceed the maximum allowable by Council for traditional pit & pipe drainage systems and severely restrict access for the safe operation of some construction vehicles & machinery. Our innovative solution was to design unconventional flexible High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE) pipelines, continuously electro-fusion welded on site and anchored into the ground with sizable restraint anchor anchors. This design allowed the pipes to be continuously fed into the trench from the top of the escarpment (minimising the amount of machinery required on the steep embankment during construction), whilst providing the flexibility and secure anchoring to make the steep pipe grades possible. This approach has already proved successful in Stage 1 of the development and has allowed for the successful completion of this development.

Highfields Sewer Pump Station & Rising Main

On behalf of Newlands Civil Construction engaged by the Toowoomba Regional Council under a Design and Construct contract, Kehoe Myers completed the Detailed Design and Documentation of the Design and Construct component in collaboration with Newlands.

Design participation in TRC's Design and Construct project involving two new sewage pump stations and rising mains, in collaboration with Newlands Civil. Complete design based on TRC's Principal Project Requirements and the supplied comprehensive survey. Our second phase engagement for construction inspections and certification, as well as design verification and full certification enabling TRC approval of "For Construction" paperwork prior to construction.

To construct a viable design (that could be used by the other consultants), we used precast sewer pumping stations with integral structural, electrical, and mechanical site solutions designed by the supplier.

Construction phase took this project to completion and hand over to TRC assets after sufficient inspections and RPEQ certification that the final products were in accordance with the design intent.

The Glennie School Science Centre

The Hydraulic Engineering team played a pivotal role in ensuring the functionality and sustainability of the Science Centre's infrastructure. Our team designed domestic water supply, encompassing both hot and cold water reticulation, to meet the demands of the modern educational facility. Furthermore, we implemented comprehensive fire water supply solutions to enhance safety measures, alongside sanitary plumbing and drainage systems, including trade waste management and connection provisions. Additionally, gas reticulation services were planned and executed to support the facility's operational needs efficiently.

Structural Engineering formed the backbone of the Science Centre's architectural integrity and resilience. Our team designed footings and ground slabs spanning Basement Floor Level and Ground floor level, ensuring optimal stability and load-bearing capacity. Reinforced concrete columns and load-bearing walls were strategically engineered to support the structure's weight and withstand environmental pressures. Industrial Processing Facility, Wellcamp

Located within the Wellcamp Business Park, the Envorinex Plastics Re-Processing Facility stands as a beacon of innovation and sustainability in the region. This cutting-edge facility is dedicated to the reprocessing of rigid plastics from various industries, including agriculture, aquaculture, horticulture, and industrial sectors, transforming them into plastic pellets for remanufacturing and recycling.

Our involvement in this project encompassed Civil and Hydraulic Engineering works, aiming to create a seamless integration of infrastructure while adhering to stringent regulatory standards and environmental considerations.

Key aspects of our contribution included the preparation of the Engineering Infrastructure Report, detailing traffic assessments and vehicular manoeuvring requirements for the proposed new car park and driveways. Development of the Conceptual Stormwater Management Plan, ensuring compliance with local authority and Queensland Urban Drainage Manual (QUDM) requirements, while also addressing downstream network conditions.

As well as detailed design and documentation of the facility, encompassing street and car park drainage, roof water capture and storage, water quality provisions, and service connections for water supply and firewater compliance. Oversight of general site works, including building platforms, vehicular access areas, car parking, and pedestrian areas, as well as structural engineering inspections throughout the construction process.

The facility itself comprises two industrial sheds spanning 2,000 square meters each, a 300 square meter office space, and a vast 4,000 square meter concrete sealed hardstand area. Cost-effective construction methodologies were employed, such as utilising rock around the batter in lieu of retaining walls, to accommodate the large hardstand area required for material handling and laydown.

Notably, the hydraulic system was designed as a semi-closed-loop system to maximise water efficiencies, allowing non-potable water to be utilised by the machinery, further enhancing sustainability practices.

Toowoomba Sports Club

Movable walls within the club add a dynamic touch, easily adapting to accommodate gatherings of varying sizes.

In collaboration with Ultralinea Architecture, our Structural Engineering Services played a pivotal role in ensuring the viability of the proposed enhancements. From assessing the existing structure for feasibility to executing modifications such as suspended concrete floor adjustments at ground level and the design of a temporary steel frame to support an escalator at the first-floor level, our team provided support throughout the project.

Our involvement began with an initial site visit alongside the project team, followed by the development of preliminary designs and high-level feasibility assessments. As the project progressed, our services extended to detailed design, documentation, and certification of key elements, including a new concrete ramp at the entry and modifications to the ground floor. During construction, we remained actively engaged, conducting certification inspections and facilitating seamless communication between the architect, building contractor, and project stakeholders.

Soldiers Memorial Hall Toowoomba

The Toowoomba Soldiers Memorial Hall, a cherished heritage-listed landmark situated at the intersection of Ruthven Street and Herries Street, stands as a tribute to the valiant soldiers of World War I, whose sacrifices resonate within its hallowed halls. Erected in three phases spanning from 1923 to 1959, this architectural marvel serves as a testament to collective memory and historical legacy.

Our involvement commenced with phase 1, focusing on project definition & schematic design. Undertaking a comprehensive initial inspection, we conducted a high-level assessment of the building's engineering elements, identifying key issues, constraints, and opportunities. Collaborating closely with external consultants, including Soil Surveys and Minstaff Survey, we embarked on a thorough engineering assessment, utilising cutting-edge non-destructive concrete scanning to evaluate the suspended slab's capacity without invasive testing. Our contributions to the master program and feasibility studies facilitated informed decision-making, laying the groundwork for subsequent phases.

Transitioning into Phase 2, Detailed Design, our team delved into the intricacies of design and documentation, meticulously crafting solutions that balanced heritage preservation with contemporary compliance requirements. Since its establishment in 1911, the Empire Theatre has been a pillar of culture and entertainment in Toowoomba, fostering a sense of community within its iconic walls. Despite facing adversity, including a devastating fire in 1933 and closure due to the advent of television in 1971, the theatre persevered. In 1997, a restoration effort spearheaded by Lead Architect Hassall Pty Ltd breathed new life into the venue, meticulously preserving its historical integrity across three distinct design periods. The renowned façade, adorned with a grand proscenium and other defining features, stands as a testament to the theatre's storied past.

Today, the Empire Theatre stands as a symbol of resilience and rejuvenation, offering seating for over 1,500 patrons, complemented by bars, lounges, a restaurant, and essential amenities, establishing itself as the largest performing arts precinct in Regional Australia.

Our involvement in this esteemed project, commissioned by the Toowoomba Regional Council, encompassed Civil, Structural, and Hydraulic engineering services, with Ashburner Francis Toowoomba contributing electrical and lighting design and documentation.

The Stage 1 & 2 upgrades focused on a comprehensive refurbishment of the main auditorium, enhancements to the north bar, and the addition of a new South Bar, alongside expanded toilet facilities. Civil works included meticulous site preparation, stormwater drainage, and ensuring accessibility for all individuals. Structurally, alterations were made to stairs, the box office canopy roof, and the southern roof, meticulously adhering to the original architectural design. Hydraulic upgrades encompassed state-of-the-art kitchen facilities, amenities, and bars, integrating post-mix reticulation and ensuring compliance with stringent fire safety regulations.

Stage 3 of the project further elevated the theatre's functionality and appeal, with enhancements to the change rooms and performers' entrance.

Toowoomba Toyota Service & Pre-Delivery Centre

This 4700m² expansion encompasses a new L-shaped three-story building adjoining the existing service facility and features an array of amenities including a dedicated showroom showcasing top-of-the-line 4WD accessories to meticulously appointed workshop offices, servicing bays, and specialised detailing areas, every aspect has been designed to exceed expectations. Furthermore, with ample space allocated for parts storage, a carwash area, and even a car photo booth turntable, convenience and efficiency remain at the forefront of this visionary project.

Navigating the intricacies of the Civil and Hydraulic components posed both an exciting challenge and a testament to our expertise. We encountered many site constraints, each demanding a tailored solution. From integrating a basement for parking and servicing, complete with ramp access from both street frontages to accommodate parts delivery trucks, to establishing ramp connections from the existing service area to the new space, our team diligently ensured that every detail was addressed.

Moreover, with stormwater drainage complexities requiring adept solutions to facilitate minimal runoff into the council's drainage system, and the seamless extension of fire safety systems to the new extension, including the installation of a fire break tank, booster assembly, and pumps, our commitment to excellence shone through at every stage.

Structural engineering considerations extended beyond construction, embracing the harmonious integration of the new with the existing. Challenges were met with innovative solutions, from minimising slab depths over ramps to facilitate optimal clearance, to constructing against existing buildings with contiguous piles to retain structures prior to basement excavation. The ground floor slab was intricately tailored to accommodate supporting column locations and basement parking requirements, while large, cantilevered steel roof structures and box gutters were designed to maximise workspace efficiency. Even modifications to existing tilt concrete panels were documented to ensure seamless access to the new building.

Preserving businesses within Toowoomba's CBD is crucial for community vitality and aesthetic appeal. Utilising adjacent properties instead of expanding to distant undeveloped sites demonstrates a commitment to local growth and sustainability. Tummaville Road Bridge Replacement

Tummaville Road, linking the Gore Highway and Millmerran Leyburn Road southeast of Toowoomba, QLD, faced a significant challenge when the previous bridge over the Condamine River North Branch became damaged and was subsequently decommissioned. In response, the Toowoomba Regional Council (TRC) engaged Kehoe Myers Consulting Engineers to design a replacement bridge. This new structure was envisioned to be a reinforced concrete structure, mirroring the clearance of its predecessor while enhancing flood resilience and adhering to the latest Australian Standards. With the previous bridge no longer in service, local traffic began utilising an existing side track to navigate the dry creek bed, prompting the need for a replacement bridge.

The Kehoe Myers team worked closely with the Client, the Environmental Engineering Consultant and the Geotechnical Engineering Consultant to design a bridge structure that would meet the needs of the Client and the Tummaville community.

The resulting Tummaville Road Bridge, conceived by our Structural Engineers, stands as a testament to meticulous design and engineering prowess. Spanning two lanes across two spans, the concrete bridge stretches approximately 38 meters in length and 10 meters in width. Its structural integrity is fortified by pre-stressed concrete driven piles, precast concrete scour protection at abutments, in-situ concrete headstocks, abutments and wing walls, transversely stressed deck units, rectangular laminated elastomeric bearing pads, and precast concrete castellated kerbs.

Given the frequent passage of oversized agricultural machinery, TRC granted a design exception, allowing for the removal of low-performance traffic barriers and their replacement with castellated kerbs exclusively on the bridge itself. Our design seamlessly incorporated these enhancements along the bridge and its approaches.

The roadworks and civil design were masterfully executed by our Civil Engineers, who ensured the incorporation of safe operating speeds, curve widening, and consideration of existing infrastructure and environmental factors.

Throughout the project, our team navigated each challenge with enthusiasm, leveraging collective expertise to secure the best possible outcome for our client.

UniSQ Tea House

Our team was engaged to design, document, and certify the new pavilion overhanging the lagoon at UniSQ’s Japanese Gardens.

Our civil design included general siteworks affected by the building, including the design of building platforms and finished surface levels sufficient for functional surface drainage of the site.

The structural design consisted of the foundations, footings, and suspended floor structure. This thoughtfully designed pavilion enhances the tranquil setting of the gardens, providing visitors with a peaceful and inviting place to relax and enjoy the surroundings.

Our Civil Engineering services encompassed a spectrum of site works, including driveway crossovers, vehicular access zones, and meticulously planned parking facilities. Additionally, our team addressed critical aspects such as site drainage, stormwater management, and erosion and sediment control, ensuring seamless integration with the surrounding environment.

Our Hydraulic Engineering team focused on optimal functionality and efficiency. We completed the detailed design for fire water supply, domestic water supply, sanitary plumbing, and roof water drainage, prioritising safety and operational reliability.

Adding to our portfolio of sports stadiums, we proudly present the Toowoomba Grammar School (TGS) Stadium, a beacon of sporting excellence that officially opened its doors in September 2018.

This architectural marvel boasts two expansive basketball courts above a cavernous open space housing five indoor cricket pitches. Elevated spectator seating, classrooms, and staff rooms adorn the upper level, providing a panoramic view of the sporting action below.

The Civil and Structural Engineering undertakings for the TGS Stadium were nothing short of intricate. Carving out the lower level, we excavated a staggering 10 meters into the existing oval, presenting a unique challenge that demanded innovative solutions. Our team engineered a retaining wall that stood independent of the building, employing slip joints to accommodate movement without compromising structural integrity. Careful consideration was given to seamlessly link the new retaining structure with existing walls, ensuring a harmonious integration.

The structural engineering feats of the building were equally complex. Opting for large-span composite beams, we created a robust framework that allowed for the expansive open space required for the cricket pitches, all while providing support for the basketball courts above. Precision was paramount as we meticulously calculated deflection for the specialised sports flooring, ensuring optimal performance on the courts. Collaborating with specialist contractors, the sports flooring was laid using over 10,000 packers to achieve flawless floor leveling.

Passion for preserving the rich historical tapestry of our client projects is ingrained within our ethos. Nowhere is this commitment more evident than in our work within Toowoomba and the Darling Downs region, where historical significance abounds. Among these cherished sites stands Rowes, an iconic structure that has graced the Toowoomba skyline since 1892, weaving itself into the very fabric of the community.

The ravages of the 2011 floods inflicted their toll on Rowes, inundating its shop floor and leaving behind a trail of devastation. Undeterred, Kehoe Myers embarked on a collaborative journey with Aspect Architects and Northbuild Construction to breathe new life into the revered Rowes Precinct. This revitalised space now boasts contemporary office spaces and a coffee shop, seamlessly blending modern functionality with echoes of the past.

Throughout the design process, Kehoe Myers demonstrated adaptability by integrating recycled materials sourced from iconic Toowoomba landmarks, including materials from the Toowoomba Foundry and the brickwork of Rowes' original structure. Our Structural engineering team completed the upgrade of internal flooring to align with modern standards, skilfully incorporating original brickwork and materials from other admired Toowoomba building. Notably, designing reinforced masonry load-bearing walls for the lift shaft presented a challenge that our team embraced.

On the Civil engineering front, we evaluated the pitch levels of connecting roofs, devising innovative solutions to fulfill Toowoomba Regional Council's Stormwater Collection Requirements. Our scope also included comprehensive siteworks, encompassing building platforms, driveway crossovers, vehicle access and paved pedestrian areas.

The Bass Cattle Saleyard, also known as the Waco Bull Depot, graces the landscape just 13 kilometres west of Mitchell along the Warrego Highway. Nestled amidst the picturesque Western Downs of regional Queensland, this esteemed venue transcends its primary function as cattle selling complex, doubling as a charming locale for weddings and various other gatherings.

Comprising of an array of amenities, the complex boasts a well-appointed hospitality area, essential amenities, and a tiered seating grandstand, all offering panoramic views of the surrounding countryside.

Engaged by Feather & Lawry Design, our team was tasked with the structural and civil engineering that underpin this remarkable establishment.

Our structural services entailed the detailed design and documentation of footings and floor slabs for both the cattle auction ring and café buildings, as well as the integration of reinforced concrete bearing walls and structural steel elements, including the intricate roof framing of these pivotal structures.

The hydraulic team designed the hot and cold-water reticulation systems, seamlessly supplying the amenities and café buildings from a central water storage tank housed within the amenities building. Furthermore, our team expertly engineered the sanitary plumbing and drainage systems, ensuring efficient operation and compliance with regulations.

Emmanuila Drive Reservoir

Kehoe Myers were engaged by Toowoomba Regional Council to undertake the upgrade of 2x 75kL Reservoirs at Emmanulla Drive in Kingsthorpe (Mount Kingsthorpe) and replace them with a 500kL reservoir as a way of providing security of supply to Kingsthorpe. Our services included design and documentation including relevant applications as well as secondment services.

Our involvement in the concept phase encompassed various critical tasks, including formulating a detailed brief for surveying, service location, and geotechnical investigations. We effectively managed and coordinated these essential services while preparing a robust concept design for the replacement of the Emmanulla Drive Reservoirs. Key design requirements included ensuring the new reservoir's top water level matched that of the existing reservoirs, incorporating a re-chlorination facility on-site, and determining the optimal location on land to be acquired by the Council. Additionally, we carefully assessed the extent of earthworks necessary to accommodate the reservoir and associated structures, as well as designed access roads, sealed areas, and underground stormwater drainage systems along Emmanulla Drive.

Our services also extended to providing detailed cost estimates in two stages: initially for the preliminary design and subsequently for the final concept design.

In the detailed design phase, we advanced the design process to the point of issuing a tender package for a "Construct Only" contract and prepared detailed design specifications for the entire scope of the project. This included designing a temporary booster pump station at the Graman Street Reservoir and crafting a performance-based specification for the concrete reservoir tank.

Furthermore, we offered secondment services, with flexibility for extension as needed throughout the project's duration.

Chinaman Creek Dam Recreation Reserve

Chinaman Creek Dam, located just 4 kilometres from Cloncurry in rural North West Queensland, has long been a cherished spot for the community. Recognising the need for enhancement, the Cloncurry Shire Council embarked on a transformative upgrade of the reserve, aiming to create a versatile recreational hub that celebrates the region's natural beauty.

The comprehensive upgrade has elevated the area's appeal, featuring a new pavilion structure complete with upgraded barbecue facilities, a playground equipped with modern facilities, a state-of-the-art amenities block, and a convenient boat washdown area complemented by outdoor showers.

In close collaboration with the Landscape Architect (LARK), our team provided a range of engineering services to bring this vision to life.

Structurally, we oversaw the upgrade of the pavilion and its supporting infrastructure, along with designing footings for shade structures and slabs for various amenities, including the amenities block and container servery. Notably, our design of the shade structures employed aluminium due to the prevalence of local birdlife and their potential to cause damage.

The Civil engineering included upgrading the sealed carpark and road, establishing a gravel carpark area, constructing a concrete recreation space, and laying out pedestrian pathways to ensure accessibility and convenience for all visitors.

Hydraulically, we devised a comprehensive plan for water and sewer connections to the amenities block and container servery, ensuring efficient and sustainable infrastructure.

The project presented unique challenges inherent to North West Queensland, but our team approached them with enthusiasm and expertise. Factors such as material supply, available services, and long-term maintenance considerations were integrated into our design process.

We take great pride in our contribution to these much-needed upgrades for the Cloncurry community. The transformation of the Chinaman Creek Dam Recreation Reserve not only provides residents with a formalised community space but also contributes to the ongoing enhancement efforts spearheaded by the Cloncurry Shire Council.

Bungil Creek Bridge Upgrade

Bungil Creek Bridge is situated on the Warrego Highway between Miles and Roma. The Warrego Highway transports significant numbers of cattle from and to the Roma Saleyards, which is the biggest cattle selling facility in the southern hemisphere. This stretch of the highway also accommodates significant mining traffic, further underlining its importance in the region's economic landscape.

Kehoe Myers were engaged to undertake the investigation of a Business Case, which explored the benefits of an investment and upgrade to the Bungil Creek Bridge, and the impact on stimulating economic growth to the local, regional and wider community, the improvements to productivity for agricultural commodities and industry, whilst supporting a safe, reliable and efficient road network with an improved flood immunity.

We complied our findings from our investigation in a comprehensive engineering report highlighting our proposed 7 bridge options, cost options analysis for each bridge and the economic study and attending a stakeholder meeting involving Department of Transport and Main Roads (DTMR) and local Native Community (as the proposed bridge was next to a Native Title Land). All 7 options were presented at this meeting by Kehoe Myers as well as the preliminary cost estimates, utilising the market rates sq.m rates at the time.

Throughout a lengthy decision process, we attended several reoccurring meetings before DTMR narrowed down the final Conceptual Options to 3 options. We completed the Concept Designs on the 3 options chosen and provided a detailed bill of quantities (using DTMR’s P50/P90 standards). We assessed the Cultural Heritage Importance, Road Safety, The Flood Levels and Mapping. Native Title, Community Engagement, The Economic Benefit and Minimising of the Environmental Impact of the proposed Bungil Creek Bridge within our Final Feasibility Report.

We prepared an economic study to provide DTMR with a Cost Benefit Analysis (CBA) for a 20-30 year period, to be in line with the Federal Government, State and Local Government Infrastructure Policies. This report was delivered to DTMR within a timely manner and will provide them the necessary information to be awarded funding for the Bungil Creek Bridge Upgrade.

The Alderley Street pedestrian bridge, once a timber structure marred by significant deterioration, underwent a remarkable transformation with our involvement in the design of a cutting-edge replacement. Kehoe Myers assisted Wagner Investments with the design of a new pedestrian bridge, to be completed using Wagners innovative product CFT – Composite Fibre Technology.

Composite fibre stands out for its superior durability when compared to traditional materials like concrete, steel, and timber, making it an increasingly preferred choice for such applications.

The bridge designed by our structural engineers boasts a sleek three-span configuration, featuring generous 4-meter approaches on each side, a commanding 22-meter span, totalling 30 meters in length, and spanning 4 meters in width. By introducing a new alignment, we optimised cost efficiencies for our valued client, ensuring an economically sound solution.

Unlike its timber and steel counterparts, our bridge is designed for composite fibre construction, promising reduced maintenance requirements and an extended service life due to the material's inherent durability.

In addition to the structural design, our civil engineering designed the erosion and sediment control measures. Meanwhile, our project coordination team compiled Safety in Design reports and a comprehensive Risk Register, ensuring the project's smooth execution and adherence to the highest safety standards.

Aspire on Hursley Estate

Aspire on Hursley offers a vast array of Lot sizes ranging from 501m2 – 721m2. Located minutes from Toowoomba’s CBD, and less than 15 minutes from the Wellcamp Airport, this subdivision provides flat land development ideally positioned to grab the early morning sun and also take in the sunsets.

Kehoe Myers assisted AFG Corporation with the Planning Phase through to the Detailed Civil design of the residential lots taking into consideration the Client’s requirements of minimum lot sizes and configurations. These smaller land parcel sizes allow the Glenvale area to offer affordable blocks upon which to build while maintaining ample amenities for future residences. The design of the intersection onto Hursley Road allows for the road users to have easy access to the estate while maximising safe usage and traffic movements when entering and exiting the subdivision.

Our scope of work included:

Preparation of the Preliminary Design and Engineering Report for Roads, Siteworks, Stormwater Drainage, Water Supply and Sewerage.

In 2019, we proudly welcomed The Glennie School's Clive Berghofer Sports Centre into our esteemed portfolio of sports stadiums. This state-of-the-art facility, boasting three indoor courts, seamlessly integrates with the school's existing aquatic complex, enhancing its reputation as a premier sporting destination. Spanning over 3,500 square meters, the Centre encompasses a range of amenities including a reception area, café, office space, first aid room, and modern multi-purpose courts complete with perimeter seating. Additionally, under croft car parking and storage facilities ensure convenience and functionality for users.

Constructed with large-span steel roof trusses and a suspended post-tension concrete floor, the Sports Centre stands as a testament to architectural excellence and structural ingenuity. Working closely with Burling Brown Architects, our team meticulously designed the Centre to complement the existing aesthetic of The Glennie School, ensuring seamless integration within the campus environment.

Our involvement in this project extended to structural, civil, and hydraulic engineering services, encompassing a diverse range of tasks.

Highfields Sports and Recreational Park - Stage 2

Highfields Sport and Recreation Park stands as a premier destination, offering a top-tier, multi-sport facility that caters to both local enthusiasts and visiting teams alike. The array of amenities at Highfields Sport and Recreation Park seamlessly caters to the diverse needs of all participants, elevating the sporting experience to new heights. Among these offerings are three meticulously maintained rectangular playing fields, including one adaptable oval ideal for cricket, all complemented by a well-appointed clubhouse. A dedicated netball court precinct, complete with its own clubhouse, serves the needs of avid netball enthusiasts. The park's sprawling walk/cycle path network invites visitors to immerse themselves in the lush surroundings at their leisure, while ample car parking facilities ensure hassle-free access for all visitors and accommodate the influx of participants.

As well as welcoming picnic facilities, featuring BBQs, shelters, and picnic tables, create an inviting setting for outdoor gatherings. As Highfields continues to experience rapid community growth, Highfields Sport and Recreation Park emerges as a beacon of progress, providing much-needed sporting infrastructure to meet the demands of the burgeoning population.

Stage 2 of the development, a crucial component of the government's Get Playing Plus program, elevated the park's offerings even further. Plans included five additional rectangular fields, four multi-purpose courts, a clubhouse, and essential amenities, the expansion is set to redefine the sporting landscape of the region.

Our involvement in the project centered on the detailed design of Stage 2 civil works for Council construction team. From seamlessly integrating the new development with the existing Stage 1 infrastructure to facilitating the creation of a new road at the eastern end of the site, our team ensured a harmonious blend of functionality and aesthetics.

The scope of our work extended beyond the design, encompassing active participation during the construction phase to provide support to the Council. From road works and car parking to stormwater drainage infrastructure and auxiliary services, every aspect was considered to meet the highest standards of quality and compliance.

Despite encountering various challenges along the way, including the imperative of achieving full Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) compliance and meeting revised stormwater objectives, our team remained steadfast in our commitment to delivering lasting value.

Buffel Park Village Expansion

The Buffel Park Village expansion includes an additional 200 standard rooms and refurbishment of 2 PWD units with a range of facilities including an outdoor gym, barbecue areas, outdoor communal area, 204 space carpark, amenities and laundry buildings.

Kehoe Myers were engaged as the principal consultant on the project, managing various subconsultants including Architect, Mechanical & Electrical Engineer and Landscape Architect.

The key Civil Design elements included overland flow management internal to the development, internal pit and pipe design (stormwater), Earthworks, Cut and fill design and strategy, road and Carpark geometry and pavement design, and pedestrian footpaths and linkage connections.

Our Structural design and documentation consisted of the footing designs for the Modular Buildings, covered walkways, ramps, pedestrian boardwalk and BBQ Shelters. As well as the structural framing for Covered Walkways, BBQ Shelters, pedestrian Boardwalk and ramps.

Hydraulic Engineering design and documentation included sewer drainage and water (Untreated, Treated and Fire), the provision of Fire Services (Hose Reels and/or Fire Hydrants), roof drainage to the BBQ shelters and covered walkways.

Moranbah Accomodation

Moranbah Village features more than 1,200 standard ensuite rooms, along with a range of recreational services and facilities. This included a bar, a gym, a large eatery and an on-site convenience store.

Kehoe Myers Consulting Engineers undertook the Civil, Hydraulic and Structural Engineering works.

The overall design intent incorporated minimal maintenance required during operation. The design was based around using the latest Hutchinson Prefabricated Buildings design especially for this project. As these were totally prefabricated buildings, detailed services considerations were used, and we adopted joint servicing trenching to minimise construction effort and time frames.

Rocky's Own Transport Depot

Rocky’s Own Transport Depot is situated in the Lockyer Valley Regional Council, Local Government Area. Kehoe Myers were engaged to assist with the master planning and design of the site’s proposed upgrades.

The upgrade includes:

Civil design of the new access into the site.
Overall Stormwater Man agement of the Site, incorporating the use of silt basins and detention basins before release into the creek.

As the site is in the Lockyer Valley Regional Council, QUU processes and applications applied. Kehoe Myers is well versed in the QUU process for both Minor and Major Works.

Due to the nature of the chemicals being stored on site, there was environmental constraints which had to be considered throughout the design process. As the site already stored gases and fuel, the chlorine had to be stored in a specific location to prevent any cross contamination and risks of explosive activity.

Regional Trade Distribution Centre

Nestled within the Wellcamp Business Park, Queensland's second Regional Trade Distribution Centre (RTDC) reached completion in 2021, marking a significant milestone in enhancing access to international markets for local agricultural producers. Boasting a sprawling floor area of 4000m2, the facility is equipped with state-of-the-art amenities including 1500m2 of refrigerated storage, freezer rooms, and meticulously controlled transit areas, along with expansive external storage spaces.

Our journey with this project began when we were entrusted with providing Civil Design Services for the internal roads and Services Infrastructure across the entirety of the Wellcamp Business Park. Collaborating closely with stakeholders, our Civil Engineering team designed a Concept Road network that would seamlessly integrate with the precinct's overarching vision. Following the determination of concept alignments, detailed design was undertaken for the infrastructure provisions, mostly within 12D Model and AutoCAD.

Within the confines of the site, our team spearheaded the Civil and Hydraulic works essential for the facility's functionality. This encompassed everything from road and carpark design to the intricate water supply and stormwater drainage infrastructure, as well as Local Authority Applications.

Throughout the design and documentation phase, close collaboration with the Wagner Corporation project team ensured alignment with construction timelines, facilitating a smooth and efficient execution. As construction commenced, our role expanded to include on-site support, providing invaluable assistance to both Wagner Corporation and the construction team.

Complexities included ensuring compliance with Aerodrome requirements for the RTDC's proximity to the Airport, optimising space within the confines of the security fencing for fire truck movements, and sizing pipes to accommodate the site's expansive infrastructure demands. Furthermore, the size and nature of the building necessitated specialised fire service requirements, adding an additional layer of complexity that our team tackled with unwavering enthusiasm.

Thrilled to contribute to the development of this world-class export facility, we are proud to play a role in bolstering Queensland's export capabilities and fostering local economic growth. Spicers Peak Lodge

The Bank

Renowned for its exquisitely detailed sandstone façade, this heritage-listed gem received the expert touch of our team, entrusted with the Structural and Hydraulic Engineering aspects of its revitalisation.

Now adorned with a rooftop restaurant and bar, the building's transformation is nothing short of spectacular. The rooftop bar has large clear span beams over the original roof slab to the main vertical supports of the building. Meticulous engineering ensured that the addition of these features did not impose any undue strain on the existing roof slab. Further enhancing the allure, steel frames support a retractable roof, allowing patrons to bask in sunshine by day and revel under the moonlight by night.

In close collaboration with Struxi, our team seamlessly integrated a new lift and two staircases into the historic fabric of the building. The street-level space is designated for commercial premises, while the middle level hosts office tenancies. Notably, the original bank safe room has been repurposed into functional office space, while an original concrete bunker at the rear laneway has been transformed into a cozy café seating area.

Kehoe Myers have had the privilege of contributing to several iconic projects in Toowoomba, among them the esteemed $15 million refurbishment of the Burke & Wills Hotel. Originally envisioned by the acclaimed Austrian architect Dr. Karl Langer in 1956, this landmark hotel held a special place in architectural history. Despite encountering challenges due to the age of the building and subsequent modifications, we worked closely with the Architect to seamlessly blend modern design elements with the inherent charm of 50s and 60s architecture.

Our involvement extended to both civil and structural aspects of the project. With 82 guest rooms, 2 restaurants, a bar, and 5 contemporary function rooms, the scope of our work was extensive. We meticulously analysed the building to ensure that previous alterations did not compromise its structural integrity. The design of new roof became necessary as we elevated internal ceilings in the function rooms, while careful consideration was given to the weight implications of the new glass panel façade.

Throughout the construction process, our team and the contractor encountered unforeseen challenges. Excavations revealed remnants of an undocumented old pool, requiring adjustments to our plans. Unstable ground conditions near the Gaming Room prompted an alteration of the footing design, leading to the adoption of bored piers to minimise further excavation. Other unique engineering challenges included ensuring the structural stability of features like the expansive fish tank which required its own foundation to withstand the load and the existing Lift Shaft which required upgrading after our structural assessment highlighted that the concrete was spalling on the foundation slab due to corroding reinforcement.

The constraints of the limited carpark space proved to be another hurdle, requiring innovative engineering solutions to optimise vehicle manoeuvring paths. Despite these challenges, our collaboration with the design and construction teams remained steadfast, resulting in successful outcomes.

Today, the Burke and Wills Hotel stands as a premier destination in Toowoomba, serving as a testament to our dedication to preserving historical significance while ushering in a new era of sophistication. We take pride in our contribution to a project of such cultural and economic importance to the community.

St Andrew's Toowoomba Hospital Day Hospital

A CFT PROJECT REVIEW

The Alderley Street pedestrian bridge was a timber bridge that had significant deterioration.

Kehoe Myers assisted Wagner Investments with the design of a new pedestrian bridge, to be completed using Wagners innovative product CFT – Composite Fibre Technology. Wagners CFT has been regularly utilising Kehoe Myers’ services for the structural design of their composite fibre projects, consisting mainly of boardwalks and pedestrian bridges throughout Australia. Composite fibre has distinct durability advantages over conventional construction materials such as concrete, steel and timber, and as such is becoming more widely used for these types of applications.

The bridge designed by our Structural engineers is a three (3) span bridge with an approach of 4m on each side with a 22m span, 30m in total and 4m wide. The bridge was designed on a new alignment making it more cost effective for the client. Unlike traditional construction materials such as timber and steel, the bridge is designed to be constructed from composite fibre to promote reduced maintenance and extended design life due to the durability of the material.

Along with the structural design, our civil team was involved with the design of erosion and sediment control as well our project coordination team who compiled the Safety in Design and Risk Register associated with the project.

The bridge was completed in mid-2022.

QM Properties – Residential Subdivision

Kehoe Myers’ Civil and Hydraulic Engineering team are currently working on a rural subdivision.

Stage 1 and 2 construction will start in September 2018. These stages will deliver 10 and 27 lots respectively with a large detention basin.

The site at Plainland is 43.88 hectares with the subdivision to be released in 3 stages. There are 62 lots over the 3 stages with lots starting at 1 acre in size.

The site provided some challenges due to large external catchments and lot configuration. Our engineering team made adjustments to the layout of lots to allow the external catchment to be conveyed and optimal drainage for the subdivision. Further challenges arose with regards to the dispersive soil. Our team determined a treatment using geofabrics provided the necessary erosion control in these areas.

Constructions for stages 1 and 2 is expected to take approximately 4 months. This subdivision provides the Lockyer Valley region with beautiful large blocks to support the growth in the area.

Service Station Projects

Kehoe Myers’ service station portfolio continues to grow with our team undertaking more than 20 service station projects.

Our engineering team works closely with all external consultants to deliver the service station projects with the utmost care to our clients. We now have a team specialising in this style of project, and who are familiar with regulatory requirements across many regions in Australia.

These projects span across Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria and Western Australia. Our team supports the client in civil, structural and hydraulic engineering services for the service stations. Which commences from due diligence, development approval, building approval and construction phase services.

Each service station project has its own challenges dependent on the location, Local Authority requirements, topography and soil conditions. One particular service station at Echuca in Victoria where the local Council has strict requirements on allowable stormwater outflow from the site which ultimately flows to the Murray River. Our team designed the surface levels in a hump and sag fashion so that storage could be provided above the stormwater grates to fill up after rainfall events and allow the stormwater to slowly outflow to Councils requirements. This solution ensured the design met Council conditions and provided the site with adequate stormwater drainage. The Echuca service station is currently in construction and due to be completed in the second quarter of 2019.

Kingaroy service station is currently in construction. It was found during design that there was a large external catchment that flowed through the site and during construction phase there are high water table issues. Our expert team designed a solution for stormwater drainage and levels that would convey the external stormwater catchment without affecting neighbours’ properties during design phase. During construction we provided additional subsoil drainage, changed backfill around stormwater pipes and pushed down stormwater pipes to control subsoil drainage issues. This project provided further challenges with regards to the soft soil on site. Our engineers determined screw piles provided the most beneficial solution for providing adequate bearing from the soil to hold up the structure.

Our service station portfolio is another example of our team’s expertise in complex sites extending beyond the Toowoomba region.

Rockhampton Riverside Precinct

Following the devastation wreaked by Cyclone Maria in 2015, the revitalisation of the riverside pier became imperative. Spanning 3.3 hectares of upper and lower parkland, stretching 600 meters along the river, the precinct was a collaborative effort. Our involvement, under the guidance of McMurtrie Consulting Engineers, alongside esteemed partners including Rockhampton Regional Council, Woods Bagot Architects, and Urbis, was instrumental in bringing this vision to life.

Navigating the intricacies of engineering within a flood-prone environment required careful consideration. Our team engineered a resilient bunker room to house essential pump equipment, ensuring functionality even amidst rising waters. Utilising bored piers in the bunker, we fortified structures against the formidable forces of flooding, exemplifying our commitment to safety.

From the cantilevered roof adorned with elegant bends to the strategic repurposing of existing piers to minimise environmental impact, every aspect of the project was carefully curated. Retaining walls along Quay Street and tiered seating further showcase our prowess in structural engineering, seamlessly blending form with function.

Beyond the borders of the Darling Downs, this project serves as a beacon of excellence, transforming Rockhampton's CBD into a vibrant hub. Activating the waterfront as a bustling nexus for commerce, community gatherings, and cultural events, the Riverside precinct stands as a testament to our unwavering dedication to shaping landscapes that enrich lives and inspire awe.

The Orchard…a Delightful Estate!

Kehoe Myers’ expertise in land subdivisions continues to grow with the recent completion of stage 1 of “The Orchard” in Westbrook.

The Orchard is a three-stage residential land development. Stage 1 construction was completed in August 2018 and consisted of 27 lots over a 2.28-hectare property.

Kehoe Myers’ Civil Engineering team was involved from the outset. The project started in 2015 with our team developing concept plans and assisting with town planning requirements of the site. Our team then supported the client through to completion with detailed design plans and construction services.

As with most subdivisions, there were some challenges. The current site drainage was substandard therefore our team had to carefully consider the downstream trunk drainage. Additionally, there were geotechnical challenges. The site contained black soil with decomposed basalt underneath. Black soil is highly reactive and unsuitable for roads and structures. Our team identified a creative solution to address this problem by founding the infrastructure in the decomposed basalt.

The Orchard is a visually pleasing estate with lots ranging in size from 750m2 to 976m2. Stage 2 and 3 will provide an additional 70 blocks in the future. Kehoe Myers enjoyed the process of working with our client on The Orchard stage 1 and look forward to continuing work on the next stages.

Kilalah Park Land Development

Kehoe Myers is proud to be involved in the development of Kilalah Park Estate.

Kilalah Park state is a residential land subdivision off Kratzke Road in Highfields. It is an 8-stage development delivering 202 lots into the bustling Highfields centre. This development is sure to be a success given its close proximity to local schools and the shopping centre.

Large-scale land subdivisions pose many challenges. For Kilalah Park Estate, the delivery of large trunk infrastructure whilst keeping the development economical required careful consideration by our team. A large set of playing fields/ovals acting as stormwater detention basins contributes a significant amount of runoff towards the development.

Our team were also able to turn a major natural gully receiving these flows into a useable amenity with the design of a permanent wetland area and play park. The wetland area provides both water quality treatment and visually pleasing surrounding parkland and fully landscaped play areas.

Stage 1, recently completed, consisted of 31 lots ranging in size from 562m2 to 963m2. Stage 2 of Kilalah Park is due to be delivered in 2019.

Killarney Memorial Aged Care

Killarney Memorial Aged Care has been undergoing significant renovations and expansion. Our team is providing the Civil, Structural and Hydraulic design engineering, as well as providing the Project Management for the design and construction phase. This project is a six-stage project with a combination of renovations to existing buildings, and construction of new buildings. With Stages 2 and 3 delivering a new 2 storey building, the lower level is 1290m2 consisting of car parks, kitchen, laundry, offices and staff rooms. The upper level is 1534m2 and delivers 33 resident rooms.

The building is a split level and partially cut into a hill requiring innovative engineering in the lower level retention. Our team also had to consider column placement to maximise the number of carparks in the lower level while also providing an economical suspended slab.

Additionally, our team faced some challenges with reactivity of the soil on the site. The soil is extremely reactive, and our engineers had to detail the slab design in such a way that it would not be affected by ground movement. Our team determined a suspended slab would not only provide the ideal solution, but also future proofs the site. The suspended slab was detailed to allow changes in plumbing in the future, which can often occur in healthcare facilities.

There were additional challenges with regards to drainage and onsite treatment. The existing facilities use onsite treatment. With the increase in residents, a larger onsite treatment facility was required. Our team researched a number of treatment systems to identify a facility that was compact in size. The system selected is widely used in Europe and treats large amounts of non-standard effluent waste. This was particularly important as the waste from aged care facilities often contains larger quantities of medication. Should the onsite facility not treat this waste effectively, solid waste will be delivered to the Council plant and/or waste high in medication. Waste containing medication can damage the biodiversity of Council’s discharge facilities, in this case the wetlands.

The site also contains a pump station to assist in pumping the waste from the kitchen and laundry to the treatment plant. Large tanks are also on site allowing rainwater to be used in toilets and for garden irrigation. Future extension work is also planned for this growing Aged Care facility. The Kehoe Myers Engineering and Project Management team will continue working closely with the Architects, Gary J Garnett & Associates, on this project.

Kershaw Gardens Revitalisation

Kershaw Gardens holds a special place as the "big backyard" for Rockhampton citizens, a cherished retreat since its establishment in 1988. However, Cyclone Marcia's wrath in 2015 dealt a devastating blow, causing extensive damage including uprooted trees and revealing old landfill areas.

In response, the Rockhampton Regional Council made a commitment to rejuvenate the gardens post-cyclone. The revitalized Kershaw Gardens opened in August 2018, boasting an array of impressive amenities. This includes architecturally designed shelters, barbecue areas, amenities blocks, and a captivating waterplay section featuring innovative equipment.

A notable addition is the iconic 5-level Super Sphere, a custom creation from Germany, originally intended for New York's Central Park. Rising approximately 9 meters high, this sphere comprises five levels of netting and tunnels, offering children an unparalleled adventure through obstacles, ladders, and swings.

Our involvement in the structural and hydraulic engineering aspects, in collaboration with Rockhampton Regional Council, McMurtrie Engineers, Woods Bagot, and Urbis, contributed to the successful realisation of this project. The parklands now stand as a testament to our team's commitment to excellence, with the expansive waterplay area inspired by the scenic Fitzroy River. Indeed, this project underscores our capacity to extend our reputation for quality far beyond the confines of the Darling Downs area.

Feasibility Studies

Kehoe Myers has a multi-disciplined team working together on a range of projects at different project phases from concept through to construction.

Some of these projects are not purely engineering based. For example, our team delivers early stage feasibility studies, options analysis, project cost/benefit assessments and business case development.

For the Queensland Government’s Maturing the Infrastructure Pipeline Program, Kehoe Myers undertook Rapid Assessments of a number of local government projects throughout Queensland in the Arts, Culture and Recreation field. The projects included Ipswich Performing Arts Complex, Rockhampton Convention Centre, Townsville Stadium and Sunshine Coast Entertainment, Convention and Exhibition Centre.

Our role was to determine the current stage of each project, what had been done to date and what was needed to progress them. Questions are asked through this process, such as:

Why a project was initially developed?
What problem is it trying to solve?
What are the other potential solutions?
Who are the stakeholders?
Who benefits from the project and who should have a say?
What are the outcomes sought?
How will we know if the purpose of the project has been achieved on completion?

We were also appointed by the Queensland Department of State Development, Manufacturing, Infrastructure and Planning (DSDMIP) to complete a number of further project investigations pursuant to the Queensland Treasury’s Project Assessment Framework (PAF).

We were engaged to deliver Strategic Assessments of Service Requirements (SASR) for a Warwick Indoor Equine Facility and the Condamine River Road 14 Crossings Project in the Southern Downs Region. These assessments were undertaken through research, speaking to stakeholders and really trying to identify the existing problem that the project is proposed to address and to determine the recommended next steps.

In addition to these SASR assessments, our team was engaged to do a Preliminary Evaluation (PE) for the Bedford Weir Road in Central Queensland. This is the next step under the PAF and involves assessing and analysing different options and reviewing the economic impacts of those options.

Our team takes a collaborative innovative and approach to this type of work. It requires diverse skillsets including research skills, stakeholder engagement, logical thinking, economic analysis and reporting. We are fortunate to have a strong network of consultants to work with on these projects, including Economists and Environmental Consultants.

Kehoe Myers’ diverse team means our complementary skillsets and knowledge can deliver a range of projects that aren’t necessarily engineering specific. This is just one example of such a project.

Escarpment Land Development

Sanctuary Rise Development is a residential subdivision, delivering 311 lots over 6 stages. It was designed to enhance economic productivity and affordable living within the community of Toowoomba.

The elevated aspect of the subdivision atop Cranley escarpment provides commanding views however, it also presented some unique challenges to the design team that required significant innovation and “out of the box” thinking to address. These challenges were met with engineered retaining walls keyed securely into the founding bedrock, and innovative stormwater drainage solutions.

With regards to stormwater drainage solutions, the management of overland stormwater flows such that runoff volumes down the escarpments did not exceed those experienced prior to the development. The remainder of the developed flow was piped to multiple detention basins within the nature reserve at the bottom of the escarpment, which have been fully landscaped to blend into the reserve environment. The basins’ design incorporates tenable water quality bio-retention components to outlet stormwater in a much environmentally better way.

Sanctuary Rise provided challenges with regards to the steep escarpment but our team embraced the challenges to ensure the development was constructed in a safe and sustainable manner.

Wellcamp Airport Project

Kehoe Myers was the lead Engineer for the Wellcamp Airport and Wellcamp Business Park developed by the Wagner family. Wellcamp Airport was the first privately funded major airport in the country.

The airport has a 2.87km long runway that is 747 capable with fully licensed internal cargo facilities and a world-class passenger terminal. The airport is surrounded by the Wellcamp Business Park which is situated on 500 hectares of land with a planned access to the new Toowoomba Bypass.

Kehoe Myers was a key consultant from the outset of planning. Our team walked over the site and coordinated the geo-technical investigation, project planning, feasibility and cost estimations for establishment of the airport and business park on a greenfield site.

The scale of the precinct provided complexities due to the massive earthworks involved. Additionally, there were complexities with the location. The site is located 6 kilometres west of the Toowoomba utilities network. Our team developed concept designs and detailed designs to bring services for water to the site. Our team also developed the design for on-site reticulation of services. Sewerage and drainage collection are managed internally with effluent treatment and provision for recycling on site within a community titles system.

The second range crossing also provided unforeseen challenges. The design of the crossing impacted the runway which had already started construction. The Kehoe Myers team worked collaboratively with the Nexus team to mitigate the potential costs which were expected to be more than $25 million. Our team developed a concept design to redesign a section of the second range crossing. This ensured the runway’s obstacle limitation surface did not restrict the airport’s current and future plans for aircraft landing and departure. This was a great example of how logical and exceptional engineering design can save a lot of public and private funds.

Engineering an airport from greenfield site through to completion required our team to understand and apply the Civil Aviation Authority’s Manual of Standards to this project. Our team continue to work on the Wellcamp Business Park which will be a self-sustaining commercial precinct. Kehoe Myers was proud to be a part of such an iconic facility, not only for Toowoomba, but for all of Australia. Congratulations to the Wagner family for achieving such a huge accomplishment!

The Arbour Boutique Apartments

In the realm of architecture and engineering, creativity knows no bounds, as evidenced by the remarkable Arbour Apartments situated on Scott Street. Collaborating closely with Aspect Architects, Kehoe Myers embarked on a transformative journey to craft a stunning 11-apartment building within the confines of a modest 565.5 square meter block.

Erected across four levels, including a basement, the Arbour Apartments boast a seamless fusion of functionality and aesthetics, offering a mix of single and two-bedroom units. However, navigating the challenges inherent in optimising design space while adhering to regulatory requirements proved to be a formidable task. Addressing concerns such as adequate car parking provisions and fire egress, our team, in tandem with the architects, ingeniously modified initial designs to incorporate a secondary access path out of the basement, ensuring compliance without compromising on essential amenities.

Building in close proximity to boundaries necessitated delicate considerations to minimise impact on neighbouring properties. Adopting innovative techniques such as pile and shotcrete for basement retaining walls mitigated potential disruptions, demonstrating our commitment to responsible construction practices and community harmony.

The architectural marvel of the Arbour Apartments is further accentuated by its impressive cantilever design in the northwest corner. This architectural feat posed unique engineering challenges, requiring meticulous attention to detail to ensure load distribution and structural integrity across all levels.

Stormwater and drainage posed yet another complexity, particularly on smaller blocks. Our Hydraulic, Civil, and Structural Engineering teams collaborated seamlessly to devise optimal solutions, navigating around transfer beams in the slab and coordinating closely with the architect to integrate a detention tank seamlessly into the design. Placing emphasis on functionality and efficiency, the detention tank was strategically positioned at podium level to ensure seamless drainage and alignment with street-level infrastructure.

The accolades garnered by the Arbour Apartments, including the prestigious Master Builders Queensland Award for Best Tourism & Leisure Facility up to $10M in 2022, stand as a testament to the collaboration between architects and engineers. Through ingenuity, innovation, and unwavering dedication, we have not only realised the client's vision but have also left an indelible mark on the architectural landscape, inspiring awe and admiration for generations to come.

Kalimna Park Subdivision

Kalimna Park Estate is a residential subdivision situated in Highfields, delivering 360 lots over 12 stages with construction lasting 12 years from 2004 to 2016.

Kehoe Myers was engaged as the project’s Principal Consultant from the onset and was able to assemble and control a strong local team and engage an Urban Planner early on to develop a detailed master plan of the estate. Throughout the development timeline, we ensured constant communication and collaboration between engaged parties through fortnightly meetings with the Developer and project team.

Kehoe Myers undertook the development planning phase works. With direct input from the local land sales agent, this master plan was able to provide a holistic view of the area’s geography and utilise the strengths of the surface profile to conform to the current market demands and key drivers such as lot shape, and slope and size. This resulted in fully developed lots with sufficient room for a rear shed and good width frontage to depth ratios, as well as streets that utilised the horizontal and vertical alignment to increase road safety, allotment appeal and aesthetics.

We worked closely with the Developer to provide engineering advice and consultation throughout the development in order to provide successful engineering outcomes. Initially, the site did not have access to Toowoomba Regional Council’s sewer network, given the minimal infrastructure available for service connection in Highfields at that time. The land topography of the initial staging was guided by the ability to connect to the recently upgraded sewer network close by. Future stages were then reliant on temporary sewerage pumping solutions that Kehoe Myers developed until further trunk infrastructure was provided later by Council as the development expanded.

Flexibility within the DA approvals process allowed for the uninterrupted construction of each stage and seamless transition between each stage construction, which remains the successful model that we aim to achieve on all other staged land development projects.

Through sustainable design and construction management with reputable local civil contractors, the land was developed at a similar cost per lot to neighbouring developments whilst utilising a significant level of greenspace, with a greater visual appeal through making use of ample parklands, public-use spaces, significant-quality native street trees and great connectivity for both pedestrian and vehicular traffic throughout the development.

Through effective and comprehensive planning with the chosen development team, the outcomes that were achieved from concept to construction resulted in more positive outcomes for the Developers and increased value for money for the residents of the estate.

Engaging experienced Consulting Engineers to control the development process with the right multidisciplined team leads to greater results and more profitable outcomes for the team. This is proven by the recognised higher sales prices in the estate than the adjoining developments.

Element Hill, Hamilton Island

Situated on the northern side of Hamilton Island sits Element Hill. This stunning 8-bedroom home offers accommodation for up to 17 guests along with a private pool, gym and outdoor fire pit which overlooks the breathtaking views of the Whitsundays.

The Kehoe Myers team were engaged for the Civil, Structural and Hydraulic Engineering services on this property. Our team faced complexities throughout the project which included the high retaining wall structures for the infinity style swimming pool to overlook the view.

After the geotechnical test results were completed, it was revealed that the ground of the property was very rocky which meant our team had to alter the design to account for this. We had envisaged the use of a piling system in some areas which changed to a reinforced slab to accommodate the rocky soil.

As Element Hill is in Australia’s cyclone prone area (areas within 50km of the Queensland coastline north of Bundaberg) the team also had to account for the cyclone events. This required the house to adhere to the Australian Standard AS/NZS 1170.2., as its location is in Wind Region C. Home in this area are to be designed to resist a cyclone with winds of 250 kilometres per hour. As Element Hill is built on a hillside, it is exposed to stronger winds of C4 category which requires a design site wind speed of 310km/h. Along with this, as the property is located on an island, the corrosive salty air and storm surges were other factors which had to be considered. Storm surges are when the tide reach unexpected highs during a storm event. This was taken into consideration when discussing the location of the home on the block. The corrosive salty air at Hamilton Island impacted the construction materials which were to be used, this therefore affected what materials were to be included in our structural design.

This magnificent home nestled neatly on Hamilton Island provides the guests with luxurious accommodation in the heart of the Whitsundays, including many A-List Celebrities. We are excited to be able to add this to our ever-growing Luxury Residential Portfolio.

Kehoe Myers Breakfast Seminar

On 9 February, Kehoe Myers in collaboration with Wagners, held an information breakfast on Fibre Reinforced Polymer (FRP) and Earth Friendly Concrete (EFC).

The FRP building products are a sustainable, light weight alternative to steel and timber. It’s durable and can resist aggressive environments like marine environments and most chemicals. Currently it’s most used for boardwalks, pedestrian bridges, road bridges, and viewing platforms around the world.

EFC is a sustainable alternative to cement-based concrete. The production of cement is responsible for approximately 10% of the worldwide carbon emission. The carbon emission of EFC is 70% less compared to cement based concrete. The material properties are equal or better and it’s already used for large scale projects worldwide.

Encouraging girls to pursue a career in engineering

Around 26% of our team are women, however only two of those female team members are engineers. When recruiting, the percentage of females applying for engineering roles is almost negligible. A recent article in Engineers Australia’s magazine Create, highlights the need for more females in the industry. Engineers create the future, and our future needs the perspectives of both males and females. It suggests cultural change in the industry needs to happen through:

Raising awareness of what engineering is and the career opportunities for engineers;
Challenging the profession's reputation as a male dominant field;
Starting early with STEM engagement in primary school.

By year 11, 90% of girls are set on their field of study. We therefore need to invest in STEM engagement early. Our team is working hard at building engagement by:

Attending career days in schools to highlight engineering as a career;
Two of our team members, Bernadette McCormack and Brittany Boundy, started a group "Women in the Build Environment (Darling Downs)", to collaborate and build momentum in attracting more females to the field;
We provide Awards each year to several schools for boys and girls who excel in STEM subjects.

New Standard of Accountability for Developers

A recent agreement between Sydney developer, Toplace, and buyers of the Skyview Towers complex, may set a new standard of accountability for developers.

Toplace has agreed to be liable for structural defects for Skyview Towers for the next 20 years. The NSW Building Commissioner conducted a review and advised the building should be monitored for the rest of its existence to give ongoing protection for owners.

This is the first agreement of its kind but not expected to be the last. There are multiple apartment blocks under examination by the Commissioner.

State Governments are not the only institutions examining the industry. Insurers are beginning to withdrawal from the construction industry due to the impact of litigation on profit performance. This increased liability for developers, and diminishing insurance market, means the industry needs to focus on lasting value and sustainable approaches to engineering. It’s no longer feasible, or safe, to take short-cuts. Engineering needs to be smart, considered and deliver lasting value for clients – not just the immediate developer, but the owners for many years to come.

Bjorn Jachmann is widely referred to as a leader in engineering composite fibre in construction. Bjorn recently co-authored a paper “Fiber-Reinforced Polymer Bars for Concrete Structures: State-of-the-Practice in Australia”. This paper is part of the Journal of Composites for Construction published by the American Society of Civil Engineers.

The abstract of this paper has been provided below for your information and interest:

“ Abstract : The harsh Australian environment makes the use of steel reinforcement in concrete structures problematic on account of corrosion. The probability of corrosion damage will significantly increase in the years to come and will become a major problem not only in coastal regions but also in inland parts of Australia due to increasing carbon dioxide concentration, temperature, and relative humidity as a consequence of climate change. In the last two decades, glass fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) composite bars have become an alternative to steel reinforcement for reinforcing concrete structures exposed to harsh environments. The reinforcing material is noncorrodible, nonmagnetic, lightweight, and has high tensile strength, thus making it a viable reinforcing material for concrete structures. This paper provides the state-of-the-practice in the research, development, and application of GFRP bars, with the aim of properly informing the engineering community about this alternative, noncorrodible reinforcing technology. The paper also presents a strategy towards the development of fiber-reinforced polymer bar material specifications with the aim to ensure quality use and application of the GFRP material in a wide range of applications in Australia in the years to come. Moreover, the best practices and data presented in this paper will be very useful in the development of unified international standards and specifications for GFRP bars.”

What do you enjoy about being an Engineer?

‘The satisfaction when I see the finished product is like no other. I enjoy working as a team on projects from concept through to completion. Solving challenging problems as I go.’

What was the most interesting project you’ve worked on?

‘While I’ve worked on a number of interesting projects, one that stands out was the Toowoomba Grammar School’s new Stadium, as there were a number of varying degrees of complexity throughout the design phase of the project.’

Did you find many differences in your approach when working in different countries?

‘Since my return from the UK in 2008, I can honestly say that fundamentally there isn’t any difference. There are however differences in Building Codes and Standards.’

What do you enjoy when you aren’t working?

‘I enjoy spending time with my family, and the occasional bit of time to myself. When I’m with my family, you’ll find me either in my 8 year old daughter’s imaginary classroom, where I am being taught and tested on a number of subjects, or in the yard, playing a variety of sports with my 5 year old twin boys. The occasional bit of time I find to myself, I try to watch sports, especially NRL, since I don’t have the opportunity to play.’

You mentioned that you are a fan of the NRL, who is your favourite team?

‘My favourite team is the Cowboys as I grew up in North Queensland.’

What’s your favourite Karaoke song?

‘My go to is Ice Ice Baby by Vanilla Ice.’

Favourite holiday location?

‘Las Vegas for obvious reasons.’

Kehoe Myers delivering Feasibility Studies

Kehoe Myers has a multi-disciplined team working together on a range of projects at different project phases from concept through to construction. Some of these projects are not purely engineering based. For example, our team delivers early stage feasibility studies, options analysis, project cost/benefit assessments and business case development.

For the Queensland Government’s Maturing the Infrastructure Pipeline Program , Kehoe Myers undertook Rapid Assessments of a number of local government projects throughout Queensland in the Arts, Culture and Recreation field. The projects included Ipswich Performing Arts Complex , Rockhampton Convention Centre , Townsville Stadium and Sunshine Coast Entertainment, Convention and Exhibition Centre .

Our role was to determine the current stage of each project, what had been done to date and what was needed to progress them. Questions are asked through this process, such as:

We were also appointed by the Queensland Department of State Development, Manufacturing, Infrastructure and Planning (DSDMIP) to complete a number of further project investigations pursuant to the Queensland Treasury’s Project Assessment Framework (PAF).

We were engaged to deliver Strategic Assessments of Service Requirements (SASR) for a Warwick Indoor Equine Facility and the Condamine River Road 14 Crossings Project in the Southern Downs Region. These assessments were undertaken through research, speaking to stakeholders and really trying to identify the existing problem that the project is proposed to address and to determine the recommended next steps.

Our team takes a collaborative and innovative approach to this type of work. It requires diverse skill-sets including research skills, stakeholder engagement, logical thinking, economic analysis and reporting. We are fortunate to have a strong network of consultants to work with on these projects, including Economists and Environmental Consultants.

Kehoe Myers’ diverse team means our complementary skill-sets and knowledge can deliver a range of projects that aren’t necessarily engineering-specific. This is just one example of such a project.

2020 – The year to remember…

2020 is turning into a year to remember! Our year began with devastating nation-wide bushfires, and now we’re all trying to manage this global pandemic.

Kehoe Myers, like many businesses, has had to adapt to the ever-changing health, political and economic climate. The majority of our team are working-from-home, and we’ve introduced many new policies and procedures to keep our team safe.

The current climate is both mentally and economically challenging, however “ in the middle of difficulty lies opportunity “. We’re using this opportunity to prepare, and so are many of our clients. Have you been considering a refurbishment of your commercial premises? Or, have you always wondered about developing that vacant block of land? Now is the opportunity to discuss the feasibility of your next project, and commence the design and approval process.

Australia’s response to the COVID-19 virus has been swift, and will result in a fast bounce-back to the economy. Team Profile – Bjorn’s Global Experience

Have you met Bjorn Jachmann , one of our Directors? Our team comes from diverse backgrounds with experience on a large spectrum of projects. Bjorn’s experience spans multiple countries and some very interesting projects.

Bjorn started his career in Germany. Some of his most notable projects include a large research centre for a hospital, the new exhibition centre in Munich, and inspection of an 80 metre high chimney structure for a power station. Chimneys, such as this, can (scarily) sway with the wind. Bjorn was involved in the installation of a damper (a large cylinder at the top of the chimney with weights) to counteract movement of the chimney.

Bjorn was also involved in developing a container that was self-moving from train carriage to truck. This eliminated the need for cranes and changed how train transportation was managed in Germany.

Different countries and climates bring different challenges. There are still thousands of tons of unexploded bombs from World War II in Germany. Therefore bomb detection units have to inspect all sites prior to construction beginning. For Bjorn, this was just a part of the process, however at one site in Munich they encountered a problem. The project was refurbishing an old bridge erected in the 1950s to handle a higher load capacity. A bomb was detected while piles were being driven into the ground. The entire site was evacuated and the roads closed for 2 days to disarm and remove the bomb.

In addition to bomb detection, Bjorn also had to consider concrete cancer caused from salt being used on snow in building basements and on roads. Bjorn was involved in fixing a major ring road in Germany that contained concrete cancer caused from salt penetrating the road surface.

Bjorn also worked in Greece, on the main airport in Athens. Bjorn was responsible for the Structural Engineering and coordinating subcontractors. Working in earthquake prone areas, such as Athens, requires innovative and smart engineering. Athens Airport has 20 metre high columns that sway in earthquakes. The roof structure was engineered with shock absorbers to stop the roof shaking through an earthquake. This is an effective engineering solution being used worldwide.

Throughout Bjorn’s 25 year career, he has also worked in the Philippines (on a major brick and cement factory) and in Poland. Most recently, Bjorn completed a project in West Papua for Russell Mineral Equipment. Bjorn understands cultural differences and fluently adapts to those differences to ensure smooth running of projects regardless of the location.

An impressive retaining wall…

Kehoe Myers delivered an impressively large reinforced soil retaining wall in 2019 for the Wagner group. The retaining wall located on Anzac Avenue, Toowoomba is 9.5 metres high and 300 metres long. These retaining walls are designed with a geogrid, also referred to as a polymer grid blanket. The geogrid is placed underneath concrete blocks (supplied by Wagners) and run into the soil of the retaining wall. The soil then becomes the structure as the weight of the soil holds each block in place. This effectively means the blocks are not part of the structure, rather they are merely the facing to the structure.

This revolutionary retaining technique is more economical than block retaining walls that require steel reinforcement. There were some complex challenges throughout the engineering process – in particular, our team had to consider the soil conditions around the site and the soil being used for backfill. Our team also needed to consider the force applied to the wall and connection strength between the grid and the blocks.

Reinforced soil retaining walls are mostly seen on commercial properties or used to build up walls near roads. Our team enjoyed the complexities associated with this project, and look forward to working on more engineering projects with reinforced soil retaining walls.

Our team have a keen interest in sustainable engineering design and construction practices. We’re on the committee for developing the Australian Standards for composite fibre in construction, and we’re encouraging clients to consider timber in construction.

In addition to our engineering practices, we recently introduced new internal environmental and green procurement policies. These new policies also include green supply chain management. We will be encouraging our suppliers to consider their impact on the environment and how we can all make small steps to improve our environmental footprint.

Railway Goods Shed

Nestled on the outskirts of Toowoomba's bustling CBD, stands a venerable 130-year-old building that has undergone a remarkable transformation, emerging as a versatile venue catering to both commercial endeavours and community gatherings.

Throughout our involvement, we collaborated with Mechanical and Electrical Engineering Consultants, harnessing their specialised expertise to enhance the project. With unwavering diligence, our team conducted meticulous inspections to ensure the faithful execution of the design intent at every stage of the transformation.

Our comprehensive scope of work encompassed the design, documentation, and construction phases of Civil, Hydraulic, Mechanical, and Electrical Engineering elements. This intricate project involved the meticulous refurbishment and alteration of the existing state heritage-listed Railway Goods Shed, injecting renewed vitality into its historic framework.

Among the foremost challenges was the task of designing building services to accommodate diverse future public events, while also devising plans for new internal and external rail tracks capable of hosting trains for exhibition purposes, thereby elevating the venue's allure.

Furthermore, we undertook the intricate design of external amenities such as car parking and access roads, pedestrian areas, terraces, and stormwater drainage systems. Overcoming the challenge of unstable ground, we implemented innovative solutions, including strategically layered geogrids to stabilise subgrades for roadways and parking areas, ensuring minimal disruption and optimal efficiency.

Our involvement in the project commenced with thorough site visits aimed at assessing existing conditions and compiling comprehensive reports. Collaborating closely with the project team, we took the lead in designing and documenting the works to the extent of detail required for Construction Tender. This involved active participation in design team meetings and the meticulous development of detailed designs leading up to the Construction Tender phase. Additionally, we prioritised safety by preparing a comprehensive Safety in Design Report.

During the Tender Period, we remained proactive in responding to Requests for Information (RFI) and providing valuable advice to the TRC Project Manager. Our role also extended to participating in the tender evaluation process, ensuring that all aspects of the project were meticulously scrutinized to achieve the desired outcomes.

Kilalah Park Land Development

Kehoe Myers is proud to be involved in the development of Kilalah Park Estate. Kilalah Park state is a residential land subdivision off Kratzke Road in Highfields. It is an 8 stage development delivering 202 lots into the bustling Highfields centre. This development is sure to be a success given its close proximity to local schools and the shopping centre.

Stage 1, recently completed, consisted of 31 lots ranging in size from 562m2 to 963m2. Stage 2 of Kilalah Park is due to be delivered in 2019.

COMPOSITE FIBRE… What is it and why use it?

Composite fibre is a revolutionary new material being used in many of Australia’s leading sectors including aerospace, marine, mining and transport. Kehoe Myers has been fortunate to not only be involved in composite fibre projects, but to also have one of our Directors on the committee for developing the Australian Standards for using the material in reinforcement.

Composite fibre is made up of 2 or more fibre components sealed together with e-poxy. The components used vary but often include glass, rock and carbon fibres. Composite fibre offers unique opportunities for many industries as it’s stronger and more durable than steel, and weighs much less than steel.

Composite fibre originally started in the United States and is a new technology to Australia. In Australia it was first developed in Toowoomba through the University of Southern Queensland and the Wagner Group. Kehoe Myers works with both Wagners and Buchanan Advanced Composites in adopting composite fibre in construction.

Composite fibre is being used in a range of industries due to its strength and durability. The product is rust resistant which proves advantageous over steel in industries such as marine and bridging. Our team has been involved in a number of projects using composite fibre in bridges. It is also a great product for the repair of old bridges as it can be made to look similar to timber. The product’s versatility means any shape and/or dimension can be created leading to easy replacement of specific elements of a bridge.

Our team also designed composite fibre into a section of the St Andrew’s Hospital. This material was used in an area where MRIs are undertaken. MRIs are very sensitive to metals and require recalibrating when metals are used within the vicinity. Replacing steel with composite fibre eliminated the need and cost to recalibrate the MRI equipment.

The Australian government is in the process of finalising standards for use of composite fibre. Once necessary codes are in place and engineers educated, it is expected we will see composite fibre much more in construction. Preliminary calculations suggest using composite fibre over steel will provide a 1 in 5 cost advantage due to its durability and longevity. Initial reports also suggest composite fibre has a 50% less carbon footprint than steel.

This material is being used in the United States and Canada, and will continue to grow in interest. Its strength and ability to conform to any shape introduces new possibilities in many industries. The Orchard…a Delightful Estate!

Kehoe Myers’ expertise in land subdivisions continues to grow with the recent completion of stage 1 of “The Orchard” in Westbrook. The Orchard is a three stage residential land development. Stage 1 construction was completed in August 2018 and consisted of 27 lots over a 2.28 hectare property.
Kehoe Myers’ Civil Engineering team was involved from the outset. The project started in 2015 with our team developing concept plans and assisting with town planning requirements of the site. Our team then supported the client through to completion with detailed design plans and construction services.

The Orchard is a visually pleasing estate with lots ranging in size from 750m2 to 976m2. Stage 2 and 3 will provide an additional 70 blocks in the future. Kehoe Myers enjoyed the process of working with our client on The Orchard stage 1, and look forward to continuing work on the next stages.

Land Subdivision – Assembling your Professional Team…

Land subdivisions are often considered a simple entry into the development world. After all there’s no building and construction involved therefore the initial outlay and timeframes should be significantly lower. Land subdivisions are not as simple as they appear and can often be a costly step into the development world.

The first challenge is whether the land you wish to subdivide is able to be subdivided. Each regional Council has their own requirements on zoning, lot sizes and services required for each lot. This information is often available online, however appointing experienced Engineers to plan the project can streamline the process.

Once you’ve identified the ability to subdivide, you need to start the due diligence process. This includes developing concept plans to identify the number of blocks capable of being achieved, and any potential unsatisfactory impacts of the project. Unsatisfactory impacts may include loss of protected vegetation, difficult topography or an inability to discharge stormwater appropriately. You may also be required to incorporate mandatory parkland into your development. It is integral to appoint an experienced Civil Engineer at this stage to develop the concept plans and provide an early estimate of potential costs.

From this point we recommended you assemble a team of trusted advisors to support you in the next stages of due diligence. This team should include a Town Planner, Registered Surveyor, Accountant or Financial Advisor, Real Estate Agent, Environmental Consultant and Lawyer. Your team of professionals will help determine the viability of the project and provide advice to increase your project’s viability.

If the viability of the project is looking positive, you then proceed into developing engineering plans, drainage reports, environmental reports, and survey plans to lodge with your Development Application to Council. The Development Application process can be time-intensive, therefore we suggest ensuring you provide as much information as possible from the outset. Often Council will have further requests and/or provide an approval with conditions that need to be considered by you and your team.

Civil Engineers will then prepare detailed final drawings for civil works for submission to Council for Operational Works Approval. These final drawings may also result in further conditions being imposed, however it’s the final step before you can start work on the site.

New Lease on Life for Heritage Buildings

Kehoe Myers Consulting Engineers is currently involved in four such projects including the Burke & Wills Hotel, ‘The Bank’, The Goods Shed and the Empire Theatre where the challenges of retaining the beautify of yesteryear is combined with the vision for modern design and a useful future.

‘The Bank’ development is an iconic sandstone premises built for the new South Wales Bank and then Westpac Bank, it is currently in the process of being refurbished into a contemporary building while protecting its heritage values. There are plans for a roof top restaurant enclosed in glass with a retractable roof, as well as office and retail spaces.

The challenge of taking an old building constructed to past standards and bringing it up to current standards is one that Kehoe Myers Consulting Engineers is keen to take on. To take these heritage listed buildings and help transform them for current and future generations to enjoy is hugely rewarding for all involved.
